UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Hilal Elver, ends her mission to Zambia

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Hilal Elver, held a press briefing to finalise her official visit to the Republic of Zambia, which was undertaken at the invitation of the Government from 3 to 12 May 2017. The Objective of the mission was to evaluate the realisation of the right to food in the country. During the briefing her statement outlined preliminary findings based on information gathered during the visit. The final report will be presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council in March 2018.
SUSTAINABLE RESETTLEMENT PROGRAMME OF FORMER REFUGEES IN ZAMBIA RECEIVES $2,087, 000

The Government of Japan handed over a cheque worth Two Million, Eighty Seven Thousand Dollars ($2, 087,000) towards the Programme for Sustainable Resettlement of Former Refugees in Zambia during the occasion of the National Advisory Group. The cheque was received by the Permanent Secretary Office of the Vice -President on behalf of the Zambian Government and the United Nations Resident Coordinator, Janet Rogan on behalf of the UN who are Programme Managers.

Norwegian Partners (NOREPS) to visit Zambia in Support of the Solar for Health Project

UNDP in Zambia in collaboration with Ministry of Health (MoH) and Medical Stores Limited recently agreed and signed a project called Solar for Health. This project aims at increasing the proportion of solar energy in the energy supply of the health facilities, thereby increasing the number of health facilities with access to electricity and improving health care. One of the key sponsors of the Project is NOREPS the Norwegian consortium of innovative partners, government and private sector organisations.
Zambia shows leadership potential in milestone visit to GCF HQ

Zambia highlighted the major steps it is taking to deal with climate change as part of the largest official delegation to visit GCF’s headquarters in Korea on 9 February. Welcoming the 23-member group, including three government ministers, GCF Executive Director Howard Bamsey highlighted the country’s ability to respond to climate change. ”Zambia has a comprehensive action plan to address climate change. This roadmap has been established with collaboration among multiple national ministries and provides a model for other countries,” Mr. Bamsey said. The delegation held a day of discussions with the GCF Secretariat in the city of Songdo to encourage greater understanding of the Fund in Zambia, and to deepen the country’s ongoing partnership with GCF.
Climate Change Funds Coming Soon

National Planning Minister, Lucky Malusa is optimistic that Zambia could soon receive funding from the Global Climate Fund (GCF) worth millions of Kwacha to fight the effects of climate change. Mr. Mulusa said indications were that the GCF could approve Zambia’s climate change programmes, following a successful trip by the Government officials to the GCF Secretariat in South Korea in January.
UNDP has handed over of 10 Motor Vehicles and 40 Computers to the Ministry of Health

Zambia has benefitted from various Global Funds Grants managed by United Nations Development Programme under the Single Stream of Funding worth about 174 million dollars to support health programs. UNDP Deputy Director Sergio Valdini, reaffirmed UNDP’s continued support to government and that the agency will continue to provide Specialized Technical Service Provider aimed at improving health delivery which is part of the United Nation sustainable development goals No. 3 “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.
Zambia to Join the rest of the world in Commemorating 16 Days of Activism against GBV

From 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10th December, Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign is a time to galvanize action to end violence against women and girls around the world. The international campaign originated from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute coordinated by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. In 2016, the UNiTE campaign strongly emphasizes the need for sustainable financing for efforts to end violence against women and girls towards the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
